Layoff and travel
A family member is planning to go to India in mid Oct. He got his GC from company X in early 2005. He joined company Y in late 2005. Now company Y is laying off people due to economy and what not. He needs to go to India in mid Oct for family functions and return in 4 weeks. Don't know if he will find a new job by then. Any problem going to India (and coming back) after getting fired and without a job. Also, can he apply for Employment allowance. Thanks for help

He has a green card; he is not required to have a job.
If he is otherwise eligible for UI, he can get it. It is an insurance, funded by the employer; it is not welfare or govt assistance.

Thanks for your response. Now if this person is fired for a cause like perfromance or insubordination does it make a difference in traveling overseas (and coming back) and on Unemployment insurance.
In short is it a bad thing to be fired for a cause vs getting layed off due to company downsizing? |

For UI, typically one gets it unless they quit or are fired for cause. In other words, not the result of the worker's action. One also has to be actively looking for work, not travelling.
