Married in US what to file?

Ok i entered the US on my Canadian passport as a visitor. I met the woman who was eventually to become my wife. We maintained a long distance relationship for a long time but on one of my visits we decided to get married in order to be together and remove the distance from our lives. We have a son together as well. Im wondering if i should be filing for AOS? or what exactly? Since i am already in the US and still legally so on my passport can i file for AOS? or do i have to file all the other forms? Can i get a work permit ? Any help on what exactly i need to fill out to get a work permit and my status changed from visitor to whatever would be appreciated. Im not sure if i have to fill out all the crazy forms or if because im already here i have to fill out less.

Thanks much for your help.

Wondering now so basically when i get my interview do myself and my wife have to travel to the nearest office? it seems to me that the offices are pretty sparse in number. The closest one i can see to me is about 8 hours drive from our home. Seems a little mental to have to make a trip like that but i mean maybe thats just how it goes?

That's just how it is if you want to stay legally!

Unfortunately so.
When you get notices from USCIS, they will instruct you which office you will need to go to for your biometrics/interview etc. Sometimes it turns out that the nearest office might not be the one that you go to. Where I live, the nearest USCIS office is only 10 miles away, however, for my biometrics I had to go to an Application Support Centre which was 1.5 hours away (granted, its not 8 hours away like you, but its still far away when you dont have a car ) So yeah, all I can say is 'be prepared to travel'.
