How long to wait after green card before eligible for benefits?

Can someone share the experience of getting state benefits after green card? I got my green card this year in Kansas. Want to apply for food stamps and housing assistance, but some people told me I have to wait for 5 years to be eligible. Is that true in other states too?

Thanks

Your GC, was it family or employment based?

So who supplied the I-864? That person is financially responsible for you for 10 years.

That is not 100% accurate. The sponsor would not be responsible if the GC holder gets the citizenship.

Anyways, if the GC holder applies for food stamps and assistance, the government may go after the sponsor to collect the money

I am aware of this. However the OP got his GC just this year, thus I did not even mention this opt out clause.
