What do I have to do to keep my Green Card valid?

Hey guys,

I got my green card 2 years ago. I just got a job offer from a company in China. If I accept the offer, I have to stay for 3 years in China. Please tell me what do I should do to keep my Green Card during working in China?

Any common would be appreciated,

Chellen

The green card is for permanent residence in US to keep it valid. To stay and work outside the US is the exception and may be difficult to keep your card and working outside the US for that long. You can apply for reentry permit but that is again for two years maximum. You can come before the end of the two years and reapply, but at that time it is highly possible to wait for long time for the second one to be approved or denied.

If it is an American Company, it might be OK

Unless you are going to make twice what you make today, it is not worth it in my opinion. For an absence of 3 years, you will have to cross a lot of t's and dot a lot of i's and even then success will not be guaranteed.

It depends on how much risk taker you are. Some people seem doing that, but basically, it is not considered living in the US and GC could be revoked once US authority comes to know.
It's very tough to claim that you are residing in the US in such situation, as obviously you are actually not living here.

Nope - thats not true. If they notice such pattern and determine that you actually live and work in China, they have right to confiscate your green card at the border.

Find a friend that does not fib!!! Your friend is giving you incorrect information. You have to live in the US to maintain your GC status.

Might work once or twice, won't be long before you find yourself on the return flight.

Hey guys,

I am planing to apply for Re-entry permit. What kind of document do I need to attach with my application? a job offer from my new employer in China is good enough or I have to ask them to write a specific letter to the USCIS? Thanks, any common will be appreciated.

This is known as greencard surfing and USCIS/DHS is wise to this trick. Sooner or later you will get caught and lose your permanent resident status. In a post 9/11 world, it is difficult (if not impossible) to hide travel information with all the information sharing that occurs.
