Do I need to go to Social Security office ?

When I filled in my DS-230 Part II form, I indicated that I want the Social Security Admin to assign me a SSN and issue a card but did not give a US address then. I gave a US address (New York) during the interview at the US embassy.

My question is, when I enter US (POE Boston), will the SSN card will sent to the New York address I gave at the embassy or do I need to go to a local social security office to apply for one ? Can I change the address to where the SSN card will be posted to at POE ?

Another question, based on what I have read, is it true that you have to wait for 10 days before apply for an SSN and it will take about 2-3 weeks for the SSN to arrive by post.

Thank You all.

You don't need to apply to social security office in order to get SSN. SSN will be issued and come automaticly to your address that you provided during your interview. If you will change the address at POE, SSN and your green card will be posted to this address. Regards..

I went to the SS office to apply for a card because I have read here that it frequently doesn't work automatically. They told me there that they could not forward my application until I have been in the country 10days. But I could give them my application form before that. After that it should take 10-14 days till you have the card. For some reason there was a delay in my case and it took quite some time till I had my card.

So if I give a new address at the POE where the SS card will be sent to and afterwards I go to a local social security office for apply for a SS card, wouldn't that be a duplicate application which could cause confusion and slow down the process ?

I need the SS card fast as I am bringing my family there. Thank you all helpful people dragoman, Tazmania and Igmu.

Hi everyone, Dagoman is right.
You don't need to apply to social security office in order to get SSN. SSN will be issued and come automaticly to your address that you provided during your interview. If you will change the address at POE, SSN and your green card will be posted to this address. I changed address at Detroit POE on 4 June using my friend's address (Boston), received SSN at my friend's address on 19 June. Just to let everyone know.
