Name change after GC and travel
I recently received my GC and am planning to change my last name. ONCE I file the I 90 I I have been told it takes 6-9 months and I cannot travel. Do I HAVE to change my passport too ?
If i make the change in passport too then do I have to wait for the new GC with the changed name before I travel or with the changed name on passport can i get a stamp in the passport and travel. Thanks |

It is common for immigrant married women to keep their maiden until getting citizenship, so as to avoid the complexities or delays that a name change could cause during the GC process or traveling/changing jobs while having a GC. If anybody asks why you haven't changed your name, just say "complicated legal reasons" and leave it at that.
Change your name now, and you not only have the hassles involved with passports etc., but the different name will also increase your chance of getting stuck in name check when applying for citizenship, since they will run checks against both the old name and new name.

If it a name change due to marriage, then it is not complicated at all.
If the names on all documents do not match, just carry your Marriage Cert with you while you travel. |
