Duration of stay in India

Hello,

I wanted to know what is the "safe" duration of stay in India for a GC holder to return without taking a re-entry permit. Some sites say 1 yr, some say 6 mths. Can someone please clarify?

Hi,

I think the safe is less than six months, but when I called the 1800 coz I have been outside the US for 8 months, they said it would be ok to file for citizenship but I have to provide proof that I didn't abandon my residency in the united states (rent, utilities, etc...). But your trip's got to have a purpose like working, visiting (for short trips), or education. Coz they will ask you how long you've been out and what do you do? or what were you doing outside the united states (what was the purpose of your trip).
