Travel with GC no passport
Hi!
I got my GC a year ago. My passport is expired and the home country is giving a hard time getting it renewed in time. I have advanced parole (expired... applied a while ago, said can travel up to 7/06). I need to travel overseas in 10/06. What should I do? Questions... 1. What is a white passport? How can I get it? 2. Can I renew / extend the existing AP or should I apply for a new one? 3. Any other suggestions? Thanks. P |

You shouln't have any problem with leaving and entering the USA with GC and no passport. But the country where you are going will probably not let you in without a valid travel document. You have to check with their embassy what they require for entry. In some cases re-entry permit (white passport which is actually greenish-blue) will be enough, in some cases not. Keep in mind that it may take several months to get re-entry permit. For example, I looked at the Netherlands embassy website and they have travel requirements for various types of visitors. One of the types is called "US permanent residents traveling with re-entry permit". Another categoty of travelers is "US permanent residents traveling with third country passport".

you can't assume that the person who posted has an indian passport. There are severl instances where a person's home country will not issue or renew passports...e.g. Cuban citizens who have asylum in the US. I-131 can be used to apply for a Travel Document, reentry permit, refugee travel document or advance parole. Most EU countries will let you enter on that travel document.... |

As far as I know, travel passport (I-131 but not re-entry permit) are issued to asylees and refugees who of course have no citizenship (they gave it up).
My wife's maid of honour has a green card but no citizenship. In order to attend our wedding in Italy she needed a travel passport. Then she needed to apply for a visa at the Italian consulate. I think it's also required to get back into the US. I believe green card alone is not sufficient.
