Green Card Holder's extension of duration to stay out of the country

My Parents got their green card in 2004, and they applied for their extension of the duration for staying out of the country. They got the extension till 2007 and presently, they are in india. If they visit USA in 2006, can they apply for another extension now or will they have to come again in 2007.
Also, can they get multiple extension or otherwise what's the rule to keep your green card viable ?

Its amusing that people dont understand the meaning of "permanent residence". There are horror stories with respect to staying away from the US for long periods of time and the repeated use of the re-entry permit. You should search in the Life After Green Card forum to read about those horrors. All i can tell you is that there is a very high chance of your parents losing their GC if they continue to stay out of the US for long time.
