Re: re-entry

Did she apply for a re-entry permit and get a receipt notice of the same from USCIS **before** she left US? If so she should be fine to return with an approved re-entry permit (green passport like book) anytime upto 2 years from the date of departure.

Otherwise, it is fine to return before 1 year from departure, with just a valid green card. It is better to be prepared to show proof of reason to stay outside for longer than 6 months, proof of ties to US (property docs, valid driver's license, live bank a/c, valid US local address, tax return, etc.).

A letter from a doctor from certain countries may carry less weight than anticipated (Many false certificates can be bought for less than $1).

Copies of detailed medical records would substantiate the claim of an illness better.
