Gurus, please answer...

Hi:

My wife is going to visit India due to a death in her family. She is taking
her passport with I551 stamp, her DL & SSN card (her physical
green card hasn't yet arrived). Will these docs be okay for her to
leave and return back to US? BTW, she was a derivative petitioner for
AOS.

Please let me know as early as you can as she is leaving in the next day
or two.

Thanks for your time

Thanks gurus

Thanks **** and TheEnquirer!

She will be taking her TX DL with her for reference. As TheEnquirer
suggested, I will give my passport & I551 stamp copy. She
is planning to stay only for 3 months in a row which I think is not a problem.

Thanks to both of you for quick response.

Don't take SSN card because it does not help her to establish her identity anyway. In addition, loosing SSN card can result big problem in credit history.

Taking US state DL is not mandatory, but not a bad idea to carry it as an additional identification document at POE.

If she has a copy of I-485 approval notice (or welcome notice), carry it. Because when I traveled to India first time with I-551 temp stamp, airlines person in check-in counter could not make out anything from that almost unreadable stamp. So I had to show her approval notice.

Thanks pralay

Yes, she is taking her the copy of I485 approval notice. As y'all
suggested, I am going to ask her to take only the copy of SSN card and
leave the original here (don't invite any problems as suggested by pralay).
Plus, other things that I mentioned in my earlier posting.

Thanks again folks for your suggestion.

Just a side note.

Not only international travel, but it's always a bad idea to to carry SSN card or a copy of it in purse/wallet.

I see many people carrying their SSN card in wallet. There is no such requirement and is a very bad idea.

Not only SSN card, people should be careful about ANY document that contains your name and SSN - like pay stubs, tax return etc.
In past SSA used to send annual social security statements with complete SSN on it. Now they stopped it because people started losing their statement in mail.
