is it ok for me to travel outside the us? PLS HELP GUYS!

i married a USC and we just had our interview 2 weeks ago and my passport was stamped and they told me i'll get my green card is a month or 2. i just got a sort of "welcome letter" from the INS this morning. my philiipine passport is expired but i am going to renew it. i just would like to know if it i ok if i go back to my country for a week or 2. are there any consequences if i go back. will there be any problems going back here since i will only be holding a temporary green card ? i haven't been back to my country for almost 4 yrs now that's why i was so excited when they stamped my passport eventhough it is expired i thought i could renew it anyway. please let me know if anybody traveled outside the US with only a temporary greencard. thank you so much to you all!

You can travel with a temporary green card, thats not the problem.
The problem is your expired passport which you cant use for travel till you get it renewed. How did the officer stamp your expired passport?

he asked me if i was aware that my passport is expired and i said that i was aware but he still stamped the passport. if i get a new passport is it ok if i just attached the new passport to the old 1 that has the stamp on? some people are telling me that i might have trouble going back in the US if i travel outside the country because i only have a temporar green card.

An I-551 stamp on your passport allows you to travel and work freely. If you are still paranoid about the whole thing, then you should wait for your plastic card to arrive in mail. You should be getting it any time. If you dont, then get an INFOPASS appt and check with your DO as to what the hold up is.

Your first priority is to renew your passport as you cant travel with an expired one.
