Returning to the US without Permanent Resident Card
I would like to know if someone has the answer to the following....
Say I went on International Travel and on the day of my return to the US I realized I LOST my Permanent Resident Card.... or that I left it at home and did not take it with me..... What would a person do? Lose the flight and go to a US Embassy/ Consulate? Can I come back to the US and advise what happened? Will they admit me back into the States without the Permanent Resident Card? Please advise, PEDRO |

The flight will refuse you to board but if you really
managed to make it to the doostep of USA, will USCIS still turn you back? Maybe they can finger you and know you are a real PR and simply let you in with a citation of violating INA264 though |

Loosing a PR card while traveling abroad has been something I’ve thought about for the past year (don’t know why since I only leave the US 3-4 times a year). The webpage made it seem like it was a routine letter the embassy provided. Passport, plane ticket (proof that your were gone <1 yr) and they’ll give you a letter. Has anyone been in this situation? If so, let’s hear some war stories! Otherwise second hand information.

Someone I knew had his wallet stolen while travelling abroad. He spent most of the time in US Consulate abroad rather than spending time with family, relatives and vacationing.

i have heard anecdotal evidence which seems to suggest that how quickly you can get the reentry letter (or whatever it is called) from a u.s. consulate depends pretty much on which country you are in. in india, for instance (read that: one of them pesky third world countries), they're gonna make you jump through a few hoops. the situation is better in EU.

Can you get a passport stamp even if you have a physical card?
If you can and if you are worried too much to the level of
paranoid, why not always get a passport stamp before you leave the USA? Then put green card and your passport at two different locations. If you lose one, use the other to come back. If you worry about losing both, can you also apply for a reentry permit first so you have 3 documents to back each other up? Alfer all these, you may find at last the worst nightmare come true where you never expect. |
