Just got GC stamped on passport and waiting for card. Prior to this I was in this country as H-1B. Now do I have to go to the local social security office and make any changes on my SS card?????

It is not mandated by law but most GC holders get a new card (SS number remains unchanged for life) without the work authorization restriction.

wait roughly 2-3 weeks (giving them time to have your status updated in their records). Take your drivers liscence and passport. The whole procedure takes 5 minutes and they'll mail you a new card in a week. Once you have the card, you can use it and your driver's liscence to get a new job. You no longer need to show your green card to your employers.
