Are you sure that is the case?
What do you show to immigrations on the Candian side? How about on the US side (on the way back)?

On my visits to Canada, I only showed the GC plastic on both sides of the border.
The officers enquired on my citizenship but didn't ask for the passport. This may not be the case always @ every border crossing.
