    L1 renewal and L2 issues

I know a person whose L1 expired on March 14, 2012. He had re applied on March 7, 2012. He has not received receipt of application.
His family has not applied for renewal.

He is worried that his family status might be construed as illegal stay.
He is willing to do what is right.

    Any help will help.

His basic question is "Should I notify UCSIS now today on MArch 18, 2012 that his family will be filing shortly for L2 when they receive his L1 receipt of application notice from USCIS OR should he go and file for his family anyways?"

    Thanks.

If the L-2 based I-94s of his family have expired, then they have already started accruing an overstay. What was filed on March 7th? I-129L for the L-1 holder?

Yes - He has filed for I-129L on March 7.
Can he file separately for his family now? or wait for the notice of receipt.
