I have just started a good salary job in a specialized position in IT, with full coverage.

However, by the time I am due to have my interview I will have earned only $6000, maybe $7000. This is not 13k to match the poverty line as other people have suggested.

What I would like to know is how necessary is it to get that 13k? The job I have with the company I have should show I won't have any problems getting a job.

In addition I have a masters degree in my field. I'm from Australia if that makes any difference.

Should I worry that I won't have 13k? How big a deal is it?

I would really prefer not to have affidavit of support from someone as I don't want to put anyone in that position.

First of all, congratulations on winning.

Any possibility of someone within the United States' completing an Affidavit of Support (Form I-134)? You would be sorted then.

If not, I can only suggest that you keep a copy of your bank statement(s) anyway, but don't show anything unless asked. I've read a number of forum posts from those doing their CP within Oz that the CO doesn't ask for financial statements.

I really don't want to ask a friend to commit to an Affidavit of Support as I don't want to put them in that position if I can help it.

IF the DV winner is a professional who will be easily employed and has some savings, they are in a good position to get by while establishing themselves.

IF the DV winner has a job waiting, that is even better.

IF there is NO job waiting, NO or very little cash on hand, NO Profession in which (s)he can commence practice, a low educational level, and/or a minimal amount of any work experience; THEN an I-134 Affidavit is usually needed.

IF you are the janitor or work on the assembly line at a computer factory that would be a bit different. (IT is still vague.) Can you telecommute? Will you be giving up that new job? Will you actually relocate to the U.S. or are you looking at merely touching base and securing the greencard but really residing in Canada for a bit longer?

Salary is calculated annually. They may only ask for one weeks paycheck. They do 1 weeks pay x 52 divide by 12 to get monthly. Or if paid month they divide by 4 x 52 to get a more accurate annual. I was personally only asked for one paycheck though I had a w2.

A person from Germany was denied DV few days ago because of insufficient funds. His problem is that now he has on his file a record that he applied for US immigration and the next time he comes to the US border he may be denied entry. Some applicants are asked and some not. It varies from one consulate to another, and from one person's case to another. If you don't have the required funds than it's a lottery at the interview.

It's only a matter of time before they start rejecting by default for insufficient funds (in absence of other evidence) due to economic situation. This happened in 2008 to DV2008 selectees.

That's sad news indeed. I have heard of rejections based on lack of available funds too. Out of curiosity, how much money (€/$) did he attend the interview with and show the CO? Did he do his interview in Germany or elsewhere?
