It's optional only for people who don't want to work in the US during the I-485 process, or people who already have some other kind of authorization to work (like H1B or F1-OPT).

I am working because my wife doesn't make that much and we have to kids (a 6 year old boy and a 2 year old little princess ) and I have to support them.
Is the 6 year old your biological son? If yes that means you've been together for at least 6 years. What prevented you from filing an I-485 for the past 6 years? Depending on the reason, you may have other problems.
EB3 ROW I-485 Approved: July 2007
