    Applying for visitor visa

    Hi,

My mother and grandmother are about to apply for a visitor visa in Mumbai Consulate. I came to know that US consulate typically gives you 10 years of multiple entry visitors visa. But, I read on the board that they will have to stay here in the US only for 6 months.

Am I right in my thinking? If so, why is that restrictions? Since they might get 10 years visa, then why won\'t they be able to live here for a longer period than 6 months?

    Any clarificaitons appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    NG

    No Title

The 6 months is diplomatic reciprocal agreement betw USA and INDIA Govts. meaning both govt decided this for individual visiting the other country.
days before you can go to the nearest INS office and apply for extention for a fee.
You SHOULD apply for extension atleast one day before the expiry.
you will be granted an extension for another 6 months
You my repeat it as many times as possible within 10 years.
BUT REMEMBER TO RENEW BEFORE IT EXPIRES.

meanwhile if you get green card or citizenship there are ways to change the status.

This is from my personal experience.
