Password Expire in less than 6 months

My green card is valid for the next few years. I plan to travel to South Africa with my SA passport, but it will expire 3 months after I return. I already applied for a new passport, but it seems that it will not be ready before I depart.

What are the rules when traveling between US and SA with regards to passport expiry date? I heard of people having trouble when trying to return to the US with passports that expire in less than 6 months. Anyone have experience or suggestions about this? Are there documented guidelines I can refer to if I get confronted with this issue?
