Can you study if you're out of status?

I read somewhere that if you file the I-485, your F1 visa will no longer be valid. And your AOS will be pending. How will you continue your studies if your F1 is no longer valid?

You are enrolled as an AOS pending student and in some cases as an non-maticulating student and when you get your approval you show them and they put you as perm resident student.
