Physician on H1B, funding for research other than from employer

I am physician on H1 B visa employed by a hospital. I am planning to take part in Medical Research (phase 4 – clinical trials). It’s being funded by the pharmaceutical company, which manufactures the drug being studied. I have obtained verbal approval from my current employer to go ahead with the study and manage it’s budgeting. Since it involves patients in more than one hospital in the locality, It would be logistically easier if I could use my name and social security number for managing the operations on the W-9 form. Would receiving these amounts for this purpose be out purview / downright illegal considering my H1-B status.

    Thanks much
    Raks
