they saw the visa stamped on the passport.
Not really....
My coworker just went on Friday and they gave it only for 1.5 years, with the TEMP INS STATUS, based on her H1 date.
I guess it just happened randomly in a few cases....I know a couple of people who got it for 4 years from the Edison DMV.

so looks like the EATON office is issuing 4 -yr lic irrespective of you are on temp visa or not.

Edison DMV?? Arent we H1 ppl supposed to goto the regional service center only to obtain Driver Lic?
There are only 4 regional service centers in NJ -
West Deptford
Eatontown
Trenton
Wayne
So, there is no regional service center in Edison.
There is no need to go to the regional center alone. You can go to the regular DMV centers as well. I confirmed it in person with the Edison DMV last week.
Looks like they started accomodating in the regular centers as the regional offices are getting overloaded.
Did you talk to someone from MVS 800 # ??? Last time i heard we had to go to regional center for H1 immigrants.

hmm.. I didnt knew they are allowing H1 candidates to get Driver Lic at regular DMV center. I have been personally going to the regional center since a couple years and they always give me Driver lic until H1 validity date.
I appreciate if somebody explains the procedure involved in obtaining driver's lic for H4(dependent) visa holders in NJ state.
Since H4 holders do not hold SSN, howdo they get driver's lic?
Thanks

there is no need for ssn. you will have to go to ssn office and get a no objection letter from them stating that you cannot have ssn
I did not talk to anyone at MVS, I went to the DMV in Edison, they asked for Visa or I797 proof to get the license renewed.
I am still waiting on that. Once I get the I797 I will give a shot at the Edison DMV. Either way, will keep this forum posted.

Dependent visa holders can get ITIN number (used for tax reporting purposes) - apply for ITIN for the H4 visa holder - you will need that anyways for tax reporting purposes and you can use the ITIN number as SSN to obtain driver lic. ITIN number is also a 9 digit number (xxx-xx-xxxx) just like SSN.
here are some more details about ITIN -

although ITIN is not supposed to be used for anything but tax purposes only. But I think you can show that document to DMV and they will probably issue driver lic. I am not 100% sure though. Worth a try.

I guess, NJ SESA is dead again, no approvals. Looking at this pattern, it seems that they wake from their stasis once in a month and work on couple of cases and get back to their beds. I guess outsourcing is the best alternative for them.
VA is moving faster than NJ, this is so sick
