Time towards L1 is counted for the 6 year maximum on a H1B visa. I would suggest that you let the USCIS know about the error and do not stay beyond the legal time as later on it might come and haunt you.

Yes. You might be able to do a change of status from L1 to H1. All you would need is your previous H1B approval and payslips.

Can anyone please confirm if they were able to get employed by just being on L2 and without getting an EAD? Although to get an EAD is always a good idea, I would like to know if anyone was able to work without getting the EAD.

I think as long as you some kind of proof (Fedex receipt) that you have applied for extension before the actual expiry of the visa, you should be alright. I hope that you have applied the same as PP. **I am not an attorney or do not have formal education in immigration matters**

technically it will be a new H1 which is quota exempt. You cannot start working upon the approval of this new visa, as you would not get a new i-94 attached with the new approval (considering the fact that you would be out of status).
