Green Card Renewal

Hi,
My wife told me that her green card got expired when she was 15. She is a british national. At the time of her green card expiration, she can't renew it as her parents were working outside the US and she was totally dependent on them. Is it possible she can renew it now by going to US on british passport and then renew it from inside the US. If not, what are the other possibilities and how long will it take?

The card's expiration does not affect permanent resident status itself, which does not expire. However, being outside the U.S. for more than a year causes abandonment of permanent residency.
 
So, what will be the renewal process. Does she needs to apply for Returning Resident visa or she can go to US to her brother and apply for there.
 
It's probably been WAY too long, so there's unlikely to be any chance of renewal. It's gone. How old is she now? Did her parents ever return to the US and keep their GCs?
