You should use your Travel Document + GC if you are an asylee. At least try. If you are using your National Passport you should have a good reason.

If you were in asylee status you are eligible to work with or without employment authorization card. It is to show to your employer that you are allowed to work in US. If your employer does not ask for it, it is not your problem. You are not breaking the law. Also employers might hire you...

I have heard of people using their NP + GC without a problem including those traveling to their COP. However, it might raise questions during citizenship interview. But if you are not traveling to COP you should be able to explain yourself. You should not renew your NP when it expires though.
