I think if you travel to Canada by air you need a travel document. If you travel by land you only need your GC.
That is my assumption only. I have never tried neither one.

If you were in asylee status you are eligible to work with or without employment authorization card. It is to show to your employer that you are allowed to work in US. If your employer does not ask for it, it is not your problem. You are not breaking the law.

I have heard of people using their NP + GC without a problem including those traveling to their COP. However, it might raise questions during citizenship interview. But if you are not traveling to COP you should be able to explain yourself. You should not renew your NP when it expires though.
