Well I think it is necessary to get access to a reference. It is always good to have other people reffering you in an application process for permanent residence or a green card.

I had no difficulty getting my green card in 2007. The process went smoothly for my wife and me. and we are working in the States since :) Important is that you answer all question naturally and make an open impression.

Usually the transport for applications is not payed...but its always good to find out for yourself :)
